Title of Novel: Where Shadows Dwell
Q1. How long have you been writing? And what was the first thing you can remember writing?
I’ve been writing now for more than eight years. I started writing after I had my second child, and realized that though I had these amazing children, something was missing.
I remember very clearly the moment I started writing. I had no idea what I wanted to write, but I put on some music (George Winston’s Rainsong), put my fingers on the keys, and started writing. The scene that developed was a scene between a young man and woman, meeting for the first time on the edge of the stream. It was a short scene, but the spark had been ignited. Over the years I’ve let life get in the way at times, but no matter how long my breaks are, I always go back to stories and characters. They make me happy, and sometimes it’s fun to escape into a world of my own creations.
Q2. Did you always want to be a writer?
I suppose you can’t say always, because when I was two I wanted to be a mom. I remember desperately wanting to be a writer when I was about ten. I tried my hand at it and was so horrified with how awful it was that I gave up entirely. Fast forward a decade or so and I tried again. The results the second time around were much more encouraging.
Q3. How did you feel when you were writing this book?
I felt a lot of things writing this book. Trepidation, courage, fear, loss, envy, anger, discouragement, joy, clarity, hope. I think every writer feels a lot of those things. Still, I wrote the original draft of Where Shadows Dwell in a very short time. The original draft is nothing like the book now, however, largely because I made so many alterations to it as I progressed in my own life. It’s safe to say that this book became sort of a therapy for me for a while, and I poured a lot of my own emotions into the emotions of the characters.
Q4. How long did it take to write?
The first draft took about five months to write. But after editing, revising, editing, revising, editing, revising (you get the drift), it’s been an eight year process.
Q5. Do you have a special place where you go to write?
My office. Or my bedroom. Nothing special. I have dreams of a really great office though.
Q6. When you begin writing, did you ever think you’d get to where you are now?
While I’ve been writing for eight years, my career is still in its infancy. I have a vision and a goal of where I want to be, which starts with the release of Where Shadows Dwell on January 30th. So the answer to this question is yes. I saw myself here when I started writing. And I see myself expanding this further. My personal belief is that with hard work and dedication, anything can be achieved.
