Q1. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WRITING? AND WHAT WAS THE FIRST THING YOU CAN REMEMBER WRITING?

I have been writing for roughly 15+ years. At one point, I got married, had kids and put the writing aside. But the first thing I wrote was a fantasy story about a kingdom in the Underworld. I never finished it.

Q2. DID YOU ALWAYS WANT TO BE A WRITER?

Honestly, no. I went to art school, thinking I wanted to get into Advertising art, but that never panned out either. I don’t think I really knew what I wanted to be when I grew up and tried lots of different avenues. Later on, though, writing became therapy. I have a very active imagination and really needed an outlet for it, on top of needing a way to express myself, but not out loud.

Q3. HOW DID YOU FEEL WHEN YOU WERE WRITING THIS BOOK?

When I wrote Book One, I felt confident that it would be a hit to fantasy readers. Fantasy is very hard to get into, you know. We’re such purists when we read fantasy and expect a certain level of quality. My story reads more like a Dungeons and Dragons campaign, so I ended up really limiting my target audience, but that’s okay! I had a story in me and it wanted out. Can’t chain that to a wall and expect to stay sane.

Q4. HOW LONG DID IT TAKE TO WRITE?

A. Very. Long. Time. Ha! I spent at least ten years working on the world building aspect before I started to actually write the story. And then it was rewritten so many times over, I lost count. But, yes, it took almost ten years to build the world, build the backstory and then tell the initial story in this first book.

Q5. DO YOU HAVE A SPECIAL PLACE WHERE YOU GO TO WRITE?

My head. I don’t have an office or separate room. I don’t carry a laptop with me to write in different places. I just pop my headphones on, turn on my writing playlist and start typing.

Q6. WHEN YOU BEGIN WRITING, DID YOU EVER THINK YOU’D GET TO WHERE YOU ARE NOW?

Nooooo. I had no idea where writing would take me. I knew it would be a very interesting journey, though and I was very excited to see where the road would lead. I have to say I have met some wonderful, interesting people along the way. All very helpful and I try my best to help promote my fellow authors. I love where this path has taken me and I wouldn’t change it for the world.

Thanks so much ML Chesley for sharing your experiences with us! I hope your future projects go well and you can continue writing for a very long time.
