The electrifying follow-up to the Dagger Award–winning Raven Black.
In this second thriller of the highly acclaimed Shetland Island series featuring Inspector Jimmy Perez, the launch of an exhibition at The Herring House art gallery is disturbed by a stranger who bursts into tears, then claims not to remember who he is or where he comes from. The next day he’s found dead. Set in midsummer, the book captures the unsettling nature of a landscape where the sun never quite sets and where people are not as they first seem.
I recently went to the Emirates Literature Festival in Dubai #EAFOL16 and will be doing my best to go next year for #EAFOL17 – this is where I literally ‘discovered’ thriller author Ann Cleeves by attending her talks and then introducing myself afterwards at the book signing. It pays to be shameless at literary festivals! She was gracious and encouraging and even accepted a gift of my short story collection to peruse one night when she feels like reading some eerie New Zealand short fiction…
What can I say about her mystery, White Nights? Looovved it.
This is book two of her Shetland series – most of which have been adapted into acclaimed BBC One adaptations. It didn’t matter in the slightest that I hadn’t read book one. I was hooked from chapter one. Ann Cleeves’s style of murders are “nice” – no graphic violence, deep characterisation and Agatha-Christie style denouements! I couldn’t guess this book’s twists or climax. It kept me thinking the whole way through and I loved how I thought we were moving towards one ending only to arrive at a completely different destination. Set in the remote Scottish isles, the Shetlands, it’s summer and the nights are long… so long that darkness never descends, leaving the island inhabitants in a heightened, surreal state. Once a few bodies start piling up (in a “nice” way, as far as murders go)… well everyone’s a suspect. I even had some thoughts about the five year old at one stage with her creepy face mask… Let alone the elderly characters with their super creepy baking skills….
Gripping, excellent writing. I will be buying more of Ann!
My rating: 5 out of 5 stars.
