The Literary Suburbs of Key West

This article originally appeared in Hayo Magazine

When my Lee suggested visiting Key West on our Florida holiday, I wasn’t all that excited. I mean, I hadn’t really heard of the place and didn’t know what was there.

It was only when I discovered its literary heritage, did I get excited. If you’re a book lover, I’d say this one of the most amazing places you can visit. Key West just oozes literary love affairs, starting with Hemingway. His house is in a prime location (and it’s massive!); the man had taste. It’s also fairly cheap to visit; a measly $13 entry and this includes an optional tour from one of the Hemingway house experts.

Whilst I’ve got you here, there’s a new post up on my blog! I’m sharing my go-to planning tools 🛠 for travel adventures, check it out ☺️
  • Weekend plans?
—
I don’t know where this week has gone! But thankfully we have a chilled weekend where I’m going to sit back and let the world go by 🥰

Sometimes, I think it’s all you need.

PHOTO: our amazing trip to Dubai wouldn’t have been complete without this stop at the Lost Chambers Aquarium in the @atlantisthepalm hotel. It was super peaceful and I could have easily stayed there all day. (Link I’m my bio about our 24 hour whirlwind stop in Dubai if you’re looking for ideas.)

Just because someone’s smiling, doesn’t mean they’re okay.
—
It took me a while to choose a photo for today and I actually thought I wouldn’t share at all, but in the end I thought this was a good one because we’re both smiling.
—
But just because someone’s smiling, doesn’t mean they’re okay.
—
Some of you will know it’s been a difficult few months for me, I’d probably say this year has been hard on my mental health and whilst you can see me smiling in this photo, you don’t see the crying episodes and the upset and the turmoil that happens and spirals out of control until I literally don’t know what to do and feel like there’s no way out.
—
It’s awful being trapped inside your own head, whether it’s anxiety or depression or one of the many other mental health issues out there.
—
But there are so many charities and services available to help and reaching out is just the first - and often the hardest - step.
—
Personally, I’ve started a course with iTalk, a great NHS service that helps you find balance again. I used them a few years ago when I was diagnosed with anxiety and they were really helpful, understanding, compassionate, supportive.
—
So here’s to raising awareness of mental health, to talking about it openly, for admitting it’s okay to not be okay.
—
At the end of the day, mental health is important, without it, we lose our sense of self.

  • So how was your weekend?
—
We took the train up to London to go see the Oakland Raiders vs Chicago Bears. And had the best time...although it wasn’t easy 🙈
—
Lee is on crutches at the moment after his ACL surgery and so getting around on the tube was hard work..
—
We stayed in Stratford which proved to be a great location for meeting up with friends on Saturday and having a casual wander round (let’s face it, London activities weren’t really an option for us...)
—
However, I did manage to lose my credit card 🤦‍♀️ forget to pack the case for my contacts, didn’t pack my glasses and almost forgot Lee’s coat(!) which meant we had to get his mum out of bed super early, run to our place and deliver the coat to the station with minutes to spare before our train left.
—
I’ve always been a huge advocate of the train system in the UK, I’ve been using it religiously for years but this was the first time I really struggled. Not only did we have a bus replacement service on the way up that was just plain awkward, there was rubbish access to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. It might be a fancy new stadium but it definitely didn’t have the transport links and we really suffered because of it, irrelevant of the fact that Lee was in crutches.
—
All the trains were rammed on the way in and then it took us pretty much two hours to do the 25 minute journey back because there were just so many people. And I get that it’s difficult with so many people but still...
—
Despite that, we did have a great time. I got a crash course in NFL and am now dying for our next American adventure 🙌
