Title of Novel: Desire and Duty
Q1. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WRITING? AND WHAT WAS THE FIRST THING YOU CAN REMEMBER WRITING?
Writing was always a secret thing I did for pleasure since I was a kid. I remember sitting up at night at my grandma’s house with a notebook in bed, blankets pulled up to my chin because she had no heating in her old house and writing a story about a girl walking through the woods and finding an interesting house. I remember so clearly having the vivid images in my mind as I wrote and it was as entertaining (if not more so) as any film or TV show.
Q2. DID YOU ALWAYS WANT TO BE A WRITER?
More or less it was always a desire, but I never really took it seriously. I didn’t have the strength of self-belief until recently. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, if I could go back I would tell myself to quit messing around and get writing.
Q3. HOW DID YOU FEEL WHEN YOU WERE WRITING THIS BOOK?
I was on my way towards finishing my other series which is a steampunk fantasy and I just had these characters in my head that would not go away. So I wrote to get rid of them, to shut them up. I had no intention of writing a whole book, but it just grew and grew and the rest is history. So I really considered it as nothing more than an exercise in writing as I went along, which may sound odd. When I got about two thirds of the way through I started to read what I had written and I realised it was actually quite good.
Q4. HOW LONG DID IT TAKE TO WRITE?
Start to finish, about 6 months, but I had a 4 month break in the middle.
Q5. DO YOU HAVE A SPECIAL PLACE WHERE YOU GO TO WRITE?
I do some writing on my lunch break at work, the rest is done from my couch at home. I can pretty much write anywhere as long as I have headphones and instrumental music to hand to block out noise.
Q6. WHEN YOU BEGIN WRITING, DID YOU EVER THINK YOU’D GET TO WHERE YOU ARE NOW?
When I began writing seriously, it was a dream to get here but I felt so small and inexperienced. I’m still small, and still inexperienced, but I’ve learnt so much in this past year and only by doing and trying. I’ve made mistakes, some tiny, some monumental, but I’m still here fighting through. I have the bug now, it’s never going to go away. I wasn’t sure where I would end up when I started but I think I’ve done well in a relatively short space of time. I began the first full novel in January 2015, and by the end of 2016 I will have two whole sets of books published, three in the Consort’s Chronicles series and 4 in the Blood and Destiny series. I think that’s not bad going!
Thanks so much for sharing your experiences with us. I wish you the best of luck in your future writing endeavours.
